Pager Replacement in Healthcare Can Reduce Medical Errors, Improve Workflow and Significantly Cut Costs

Mike Sorensen, former CTO for the University of Chicago Medical Center and President of Mutare Healthcare, speaks to the growing angst of pagers in the healthcare industry in comparison to the reliability of Smartphones. “Pagers are not as reliable as many people think,” said Mike. “If you drill down, there are many disadvantages, not the least of which is that a pager transmission is a ‘fire and forget’ event.”

To underscore the point, Sorensen pointed to a study published in the Journal of Surgical Education in 2011, where the authors Sasa Espino, MD, Diane Cox, MD and Brian Kaplan, MD concluded that “…a significant number of pages lack sufficient information, do not indicate the urgency of the page, and still require immediate call back by residents. This potentially interrupts patient care and educational activities.”

According to Sorensen, a secure two-way communication solution such as Vital Link, addresses the downside of paging in several ways:

  1. Messages are sent via cellular data or Wi-Fi and if the Smartphone is out of range, the messages will queue on the server until the device has signal. Messages are tracked and traced and the sender of a message can see if the message has been routed, delivered and opened, leaving no doubt as to its status. Messages can also be marked urgent so a routine communication announcing there are donuts in the break room doesn’t get the same treatment as a trauma call.

Because the clinician can judge the urgency of the message, they can respond after completing important tasks necessary for patient care and reduce medical errors caused by distraction and interruption that are inherent in legacy pagers.

Sorensen’s vision is shared by most IT professionals.
