Leveraging the flexibility of Vital Link’s secure communications capabilities, hospitals and surgical centers can add a “Surgery Status” extension that keeps family members informed of their loved one’s status during a procedure.

Mutare Health’s Smart Notification solution combines mass notification, secure 2-way communication and customer engagement into a unified, simple to operate and economical system. Leveraging the flexibility of Vital Link’s secure communications capabilities, hospitals and surgical centers can add a “Surgery Status” extension that keeps family members informed of their loved one’s status during a procedure.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

When a patient checks in for surgery, he/she is given the option to provide the cellular number for any waiting companion or family members. That information is recorded in the Vital Link system and will be used to send text updates or, optionally, text converted to speech, to the companion’s cellular device.

All patients in the system are tracked by the nurse liaison using the Vital Link web interface on an iPad or PC. The Vital Link dashboard lists all active patients and alerts the nurse liaison when a status update is due. The system allows for pre-loaded updates or individualized messages. Following are some examples of status update alerts:

  • Patient in OR – Procedure expected to last 2.5 hours
  • Procedure Beginning – Status updates to follow
  • Surgery Complete – Please return to the Waiting Area for an update
  • Patient in Recovery – Contact the Reception Desk for further instructions

Each alert is sent with an acknowledgement request. Once the companion acknowledges receiving the message, Vital Link updates the nurse liaison’s Vital Link dashboard accordingly.

At discharge, the system can continue to provide next day over even next week follow-up reminders to patients and their caregivers per doctor’s instructions. Once follow-up activity is completed, the patient’s status is set to inactive and removed from the current view.
